Since the publication of the first book in the Harry Potter series 20 years ago, it has greatly impacted its readers, young and old alike. Many of us get sucked into the fantastic, wizarding world of Harry Potter, which oftentimes functions as an escape, adventure, example of resilience, friendship, and so much more. I remember reading the first book when I was 11 and hoping and wishing for my letter from Hogwarts to arrive. Harry, Ron, and Hermione experience so much in the series’ seven books that it makes you wonder about their mental health. They all face an immense amount of trauma – from getting attacked by a troll when they are 11 to fighting for their lives at 17. It seems like throughout all of these events Harry, Ron, and Hermione seem to manage, generally, pretty well. Harry and his friends have so much strength, love, and trust in each other that their relationships create a space for healing throughout these difficult times. Healing happens through connection, and Trauma Support Services of North Texas believes in this message, providing spaces for healing to happen by connecting clients with limited resources with trauma-informed therapists at no cost for as long as it takes!
Over the next several weeks leading up to North Texas Giving Day on September 19, 2019 we will be exploring the magical world of Harry Potter—how it relates to trauma and mental health and what we can learn about navigating different influences and experiences that challenge the well-being of individuals and communities. JOIN US on this journey of discovery, contemplation, and just good old fun. See how you can support TSSNT’s mission by donating on 9/19/19, volunteering, and doing some FUNdraising. We love to make new friends, strengthen relationships with old friends, and spread knowledge and positivity for the greater good!
